Willkommen im Riesling
Willkommen im Riesling
We believe that an outstanding Riesling makes you happy. That’s why we only grow Riesling grapes – deliberately, with special care, and with love. We cherish our vines. We pick our grapes very carefully by hand – and that several times per season – in order to collect them at precisely the right degree of ripeness. We make use of our knowledge and a tradition of over 800 years of viticulture, so that our grapes can become the very special Riesling that will make you happy. On some 80 hectares of vineyards we make unique and authentic wines. Nature is on our side as all vineyards around Schloss Vollrads descend down to the Rhine in a southerly direction. Our capital does not only rest in vines and soil alone: Particularly valuable are our staff with their years of experience, because a vineyard is like a living being and wants to be treated accordingly. Schloss Vollrads and its staff will do everything they can to make wine an experience for you. Here, art, culture, cuisine and wine cellar complement each other. Please visit us and find out more.

Ever since members of the Greiffenclau family sold wine to the St. Viktor monastery in Mainz for the first time in 1211, the cultivation of Riesling in the vineyards of Schloss Vollrads has developed steadily. 800 years later, we were able to celebrate our anniversary as one of the oldest wineries in Germany. On this occasion, our loyal partners in the trade and the restaurant and catering industry as well as our global importers joined us in the Rheingau in 2011 to each plant a Riesling vine in the former nursery Clos du Jardin. Together we symbolically created the basis for the continuing positive development of Schloss Vollrads. You can follow the growth of the Riesling vines on our webcam. The image is updated every minute.

The distinctive flavour of the Schloss Vollrads Riesling wines can be attributed to our unique terroir: In the Rheingau, six different geological formations form layers of one structure which provides the vine roots with a variety of minerals.
We make ten to fifteen different wines from our Riesling grapes per year, from estate wines to Kabinett and Edition to Spätlese (late harvest) and Auslese (special selection). If the conditions are right, we also produce wines of special quality such as Trockenbeerenauslese (dry berry selection) or ice wine.
Even in our simple estate wines we wish to demonstrate class and offer a quality wine which will succeed in making those love wine who hitherto have only drunk wine occasionally.
Incidentally, the tradition of the Kabinett wines was established at Schloss Vollrads in 1716: Particularly good wines of a vintage were stored in the “Cabinet” cellars. Even today, internationally renowned Riesling wines mature to completion in the winery.
Two typical Rheingau Riesling wines appropriate for many occasions – or simply to enjoy every day. Sommer (Summer) is our wine to be savoured al fresco in the sunshine. Fresh, light and lively, it puts you in the mood for a second glass. Vollratz Riesling wants to be drunk by the mouthful: Hearty and strong, and with a lively acidity, it is the perfect Riesling for a light meal.
* For these wines we may sometimes purchase grapes from neighbouring vintners who share the quality standards of Schloss Vollrads.
Classic Schloss Vollrads and classic Rheingau – this is what estate Riesling wines from Vollrads vines promise. We provide entry-level wines of the highest standards suitable as a wonderful accompaniment to food. They are also great for every-day enjoyment and will awaken your appetite for the next sip – dry to fruity-sweet, depending on your taste.
This quality description was created here at Schloss Vollrads in 1716. For us, this tradition is an honour as well as an obligation – the Kabinett wines are our signature drinks. Elegant, fine and polished, they are excellent wines for many occasions. The strength of the German Riesling when compared internationally: It contains little alcohol but an abundance of flavours.
This Riesling is a classic Spätlese (late harvest) without botrytis, very clear and fruity. Sweetness and acidity are perfectly balanced, so that the wine is centred and the taste lingers. Sun and the fruitiness of the grape join together in a dance on your tongue. The Schloss Vollrads Spätlese has a long aging potential.
Every year without fail this is the favourite Riesling of our staff, and it surely must be the only wine in the world chosen by means of direct democracy. The Edition stands for what is important to our team, namely vintage character – meaning the influence of the weather – and the character of the grape variety.
Blessed is he who owns old vines: They are deeply rooted and bring a high concentration of value-determining minerals into the wine. Most of our vineyards are between thirty and forty years old.
This Riesling is from our Premier Cru vineyard sides – deep, focused and with an intense lingering taste and long finish. Deliciously chewy on the tongue. Some storage time is advisable.
Whether for breakfast or a festive occasion – our classic Riesling sparkling wine is always the best choice. With fine bubbles and fruity body, our sparkling wine is a tingling pleasure, simply elegant. Matured to wine, ennobled as sparkling wine: We have been making sparkling wine from our Riesling since at least 1861. That means we have done it for longer than most German producers.
Riesling from old vines in prime location from the Schlossberg – a vineyard exclusively owned by Schloss Vollrads. That means deep roots and a lot of manual labour, low yields and elaborate treatment of grapes and wine. But it also means dry premium wines with intensive dense body, with fantastic structure and backbone. Wines which need to age if they are to fulfil their potential. They are mirror images of our terroir.
The Riesling for our anniversary: 800 years of selling wine at Schloss Vollrads
A wine made from the best, very ripe, small and golden yellow berries of the Greiffenberg vineyard. Fermented on the skins for a week and left on the yeast for a long time – until well into the spring. With its intense flavour and its bouquet of herbs and yellow stone fruit, this Riesling divides people.
Riesling wines made with passion, with our heart and soul. Small and very small quantities of these valuable wine gems can be produced only under specific climatic conditions – they are Mother Nature’s gift to us.
Risk and economic costs are considerable as we lose the yields reserved for noble sweet wines if the weather is not amenable. But if we succeed, we can make Riesling wines of extraordinary quality – Riesling wines that can be savoured in the decades to come.
What is good as an aperitif cannot be bad as a digestive: Only the best Riesling grapes and healthy stalks are used to make our high-quality pomace brandy.
Hubertus Vallendar, one of the best German distillers, creates a barrel-matured brandy from our pomace in small volumes. Fruitiness and vinosity are retained by distilling in a vacuum.
